Several incoming and returning students at Western Washington University have received scholarships.
Devin Majkut, son of Kevin and Sally Majkut of Bellingham, received a $1,000 Woodring Fairhaven Scholarship for the 2008-2009 academic year at Western Washington University. Majkut, a sophomore, is majoring in social artistry.
Tish Watson received a $1,000 Sam Polen Scholarship for the 2008-2009 academic year at Western. Watson, a junior, is majoring in communication sciences and disorders. She is president of the National Students of Speech, Language and Hearing Association.
Dimitrios Zourkos, son of David and Ourania Zourkos of Bellingham, received a $2,000 MAP Scholarship for the 2008-2009 academic year at Western. Zourkos, an incoming freshman, earned a 3.75 gpa at Squalicum High School and is interested in majoring in political science.
Garrett Whitmyre, son of Dennis and Toni Whitmyre of Bellingham, received a $1,500 Bellingham Business Forum Scholarship and a $1,000 President’s Scholarship for the 2008-2009 academic year at Western. Whitmyre, an incoming freshman, earned a 3.92 gpa at Mount Baker Senior High School and is interested in majoring in geology.
Michelle Sands, daughter of John and Theresa Sands of Bellingham, received a $1,500 President’s Scholarship for the 2008-2009 academic year at Western. Sands, an incoming freshman, earned a 3.97 gpa at Meridian High School and is interested in majoring in business or economics.
Liam Weydert, son of Alan Weydert and Colleen Henehan of Bellingham, received a $500 President’s Scholarship for the 2008-2009 academic year at Western. Weydert, an incoming freshman, earned a 3.59 gpa at Bellingham High School and is interested in majoring in German.
Jubilee Mattix, daughter of Sam and Sue Mattix of Bellingham, received a $2,500 Martina and Thomas Horn Scholarship for the next four academic years and a Bellingham Business Forum Scholarship for the 2008-2009 academic year at Western. Mattix, an incoming freshman, earned a 4.0 gpa at Bellingham High School and is interested in majoring in pre-medicine.
Tracy Pennell, daughter of Andrew and Sheila Pennell of Bellingham, received a $2,000 WWU Employees Distinguished Scholarship and a $500 President’s Scholarship for the 2008-2009 academic year at Western. Pennell, an incoming freshman, earned a 3.68 gpa at Squalicum High School and is interested in majoring in engineering technology.
Aaron Smart, son of James Smart of Surrey, B.C., and Bonnie Glispy of Bellingham, received a $500 President’s Scholarship for the 2008-2009 academic year at Western. Smart, an incoming transfer student, earned a 3.89 gpa at Whatcom Community College and is interested in majoring in accounting.
Cody Erickson, son of Brian and Patti Erickson of Bellingham, received a $500 President’s Scholarship for the 2008-2009 academic year at Western. Erickson, an incoming freshman, earned a 3.57 gpa at Meridian High School and is interested in majoring in secondary education.
Sabrina Lorgen-Knapp, daughter of Tim Knapp and Anne Lorgen of Bellingham, received a $500 President’s Scholarship for the 2008-2009 academic year at Western. Lorgen-Knapp, an incoming freshman, earned a 3.88 gpa in a home-school program and is interested in becoming a pre-physical therapy major.
Kathryn Huntington, daughter of Susan Howard of Bellingham, received a $500 President’s Scholarship for the 2008-2009 academic year at Western. Huntington, an incoming freshman, earned a 3.88 gpa at Bellingham High School and is interested in majoring in secondary education.
Aris Hudson, son of Hud Hudson and Tara Prince-Hughes of Bellingham, received a $1,500 President’s Scholarship for the 2008-2009 and 2009-2010 academic years at Western. Hudson, an incoming freshman, earned a 3.71 gpa at Bellingham High School and is interested in majoring in history.
Evaline Hsu, daughter of Govindasamy Agoramoorthy and Minna Hsu of Kaohsiung, Taiwan, received a $2,000 MAP Scholarship for the 2008-2009 academic year. Hsu, an incoming freshman, earned a 3.9 gpa at Sehome High School and is interested in majoring in theater.
Melanie Wegley received a $1,000 MAP Scholarship for the 2008-2009 academic year at Western. Wegley, an incoming transfer student, is a member of the Phi Theta Kappa honor society. She hopes to become an advocate for incarcerated Native American women.
Laura Engels, daughter of Rick and Joyce Engels of Bellingham, received a $2,500 August and Carol Radke Scholarship, a $1,500 Bellingham Business Forum Scholarship and a $1,500 President’s Scholarship for the 2008-2009 academic year at Western. Engels, an incoming freshman, earned a 3.98 gpa at Sehome High School and is interested in majoring in theater.
Elani Koogle, daughter of Ed Koogle of Sedro-Woolley and Marge Margolis of Bellingham, received a $2,500 James Michael Haskell Memorial Scholarship for the next four academic years, a $2,000 President’s Scholarship for the next two academic years and a $2,000 Seattle Business Forum Scholarship, a $2,500 August and Carol Radke Scholarship and a $1,650 Bellingham Business Forum Scholarship for the 2008-2009 academic year at Western. Koogle, an incoming freshman, earned a 4.0 gpa at Sehome High School and is interested in majoring in German.
Hayley Haverstraw, daughter of Dean and Pamela Haverstraw of Bellingham, received a $1,000 President’s Scholarship for the 2008-2009 academic year at Western. Haverstraw, an incoming freshman, earned a 3.93 gpa at Squalicum High School and is interested in majoring in psychology.
Kate McCracken, daughter of Dan McCracken of Anacortes and Joan Humen of Bellingham, received a $2,000 President’s Scholarship for the 2008-2009 academic year at Western. McCracken, an incoming freshman, earned a 3.86 gpa at Sehome High School and is interested in majoring in psychology or social sciences.
Kyle Pennell, son of Andrew and Sheila Pennell of Bellingham, received a $500 President’s Scholarship for the 2008-2009 academic year at Western. Pennell, an incoming transfer student, earned a 3.8 gpa at Squalicum High School and is interested in majoring in international business.
Stefani Sager, daughter of Bill Sager of King Cove, Alaska, and Rebecca Bendixen of Bellingham, received a $1,500 Ted and Jean Mork Scholarship for the 2008-2009 academic year at Western. Sager, a senior, has a 3.5 gpa and is majoring in anthropology and elementary education.
Seth Nuckolls, son of Russ and Mary Nuckolls of Bellingham, received a $500 Richard Greene Teaching Award for the 2008-2009 academic year at Western. Nuckolls has a 3.7 gpa and is earning his master’s degree in mathematics. He works as a graduate teaching assistant.
Niki Thane, daughter of Vernon and Karen Leibrant of Everson, received a $1,900 Kurt Schmierer Memorial Scholarship for the 2008-2009 academic year at Western. Thane, a graduate student, is majoring in geology and serves as a parks trail steward.
Peter Donnelly, son of Richard Donnelly and Elizabeth Wilson of Bellingham, received a $1,606 Aftermath Club Scholarship for the 2008-2009 academic year at Western. Donnelly, a freshman, has a 3.8 gpa and is interested in majoring in theater arts.
