Paul Gonzales, a 22-year-veteran of the Washington State Patrol from Mount Vernon, will seek the 40th Legislative District seat of retiring state Sen. Harriet Spanel.
Gonzales is a former Mount Vernon City Council member who has served on the Mount Vernon Planning Commission, the Mount Vernon School Boundary Committee, the Red Cross FEMA Board, the Washington Traffic Safety Commission law enforcement board and the Department of Social and Health Services Board.
He attended Eastern Washington University before enrolling in the Washington State Patrol Academy, graduating in 1987.
Paul is married to Lynda L. Gonzales, a teacher for the Burlington-Edison School District. They have twin sons attending college.
