BELLINGHAM — Redistricting City Council wards will go to a public hearing and vote tonight.
The redistricting is a routine event, taking place every four years if there is an imbalance in ward sizes of 15 percent or more.
Whatcom County Auditor’s Office officials have notified the city that its six wards now have an imbalance of about 23 percent. The largest, Ward 1, has 7,216 registered voters, while the smallest, Ward 5, has 5,877 registered voters. The city has 38,583 voters, according to city documents.
If City Council members approve the redistricting:
Precinct 207, now in Ward 1, would move to Ward 3.
Precinct 213, now in Ward 2, would move to Ward 3.
Precinct 221, now in Ward 3, would move to Ward 5. No changes to Ward 4.
Precinct 231, in Ward 5, would move to Ward 3.
No changes to Ward 6.
The changes would place even more downtown precincts into Ward 3, shifting Wards 1 and 5 farther northwest and south, respectively.
With the changes, the imbalance between the wards would be about 13 percent, according to city documents.
