The calendar may say it’s officially spring, but winter hasn’t quite released its grip on Whatcom County.

Lots of rain and chilly temperatures could translate into some snow showers overnight throughout the week.

Low temperatures are expected to hover around the freezing level this week, meaning the plentiful precipitation in the area could fall as snow, National Weather Service meteorologist Johnny Burg said.

Major accumulations are not expected, though Burg said an inch or so is not out of the question, particularly in higher elevations.

Here’s the forecast for the rest of the week, according to the weather service:

TODAY: Showers likely. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 48. South-southwest wind between 10 mph and 13 mph.

TONIGHT: A 50 percent chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 34. Southwest wind around 14 mph.

THURSDAY: Partly sunny, with a high near 47. South-southwest wind around 14 mph. Overnight low of 34, with a 50 percent chance of showers.

FRIDAY: A 50 percent chance of showers. Partly sunny, with a high near 46. Low around 34.
