The Bellingham Herald's seasonal campaign for its Extend-a-Hand charity is under way.

Last holiday season, community members donated nearly $45,000 to help needy local people with housing and medical needs.

Most of the money supports an "eviction prevention" program, and a program that helps people afford the move into private housing from shelters, foreclosed homes or transitional housing. Both are run by the Opportunity Council, a nonprofit social service agency.

Some Extend-a-Hand money supports programs at the Interfaith Community Health Center.

Donations should be mailed or delivered to: Extend-a-Hand, c/o Opportunity Council, 1111 Cornwall Ave., Suite C, Bellingham, WA 98225. Credit card donations are accepted.

For details or questions, call Martha Border, 734-5121, ext. 304.
