A levy that provides Whatcom County Fire District No. 18 with 30 percent of its operating budget has passed.

It exceeded the requirement of 40 percent of last year's election turnout in the district, located at the south end of Lake Whatcom, according to an updated vote count released Friday, Nov. 6.

The levy was overwhelmingly approved - 77 percent - but its passage hinged on the turnout, according to the Whatcom County Auditor's Office.

The turnout needed to exceed 368 votes, and 440 residents in the district voted on the levy, according to Friday's tally.

The levy rate is 28 cents per $1,000 of assessed property value. It provides about $70,000 annually and pays for training, equipment and a part-time salary for its chief, Scott Crowe, to be on call during weekday working hours.
