Within hours of Whatcom Middle School catching fire, people started contacting the school district to find out how to help.

"We are very grateful for the outpouring of support we have received, and we're working to determine our needs," said Bellingham School District spokeswoman Tanya Rowe.

People interested in making donations can contact the Bellingham Public Schools Foundation at 671-6150. Rowe said they were trying to set up a Whatcom Middle School fund.

Former Whatcom Middle School and current Shuksan teacher Sara Strommer has set up an account for the school at Scholastic Books online. People can donate gift certificates for new books or purchase books they know middle school classes could use.

Go to scholastic.com/parentordering and sign in using the username "Books4WMS" and password "booksforteachers."

ACTIVITIES RESCHEDULED

City-sponsored activities planned at Whatcom Middle School are being canceled or rescheduled.

Adult league volleyball and late-night open gym have been canceled for Friday, Nov. 6, and the Monday night women's volleyball has been moved to Bellingham High School.

For updated notices of canceled, rescheduled or moved activities, call 778-7000 or go online to the city's Web site.

In response to the fire, the downtown YMCA is offering teens free time on the climbing wall from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday. Teens wishing to use the wall need a climbing waiver signed by a parent or guardian. The waivers are available online at whatcomymca.org.
