POINT ROBERTS - A measure to increase property taxes to give more money to the Point Roberts Park and Recreation District was inching its way to approval, according to the latest ballot count Wednesday, Nov. 4.

To pass, the measure needed 60 percent approval and 278 overall votes cast.

A total of 260 votes had been counted with about 75 percent voting yes.

Point Roberts voters were deciding whether to increase their property taxes to 81/4 cents per $1,000 of assessed value.

The owner of a home assessed at $200,000 will pay $16.50, if the levy passes. That's up from the current amount of $13.93.

If approved, the measure would add nearly $7,000 annually over the next two years - bumping the amount the district receives from the levy to $42,000 a year in 2010 and 2011.
