Fleetwood wins Bellingham City Council seat

BELLINGHAM - A write-in campaign with a large campaign cash war chest behind it won't overtake Whatcom County Councilman Seth Fleetwood's bid for a City Council seat.

With 68 percent of the write-in votes counted, conservative write-in candidate Orphalee Smith will not surpass the progressive Fleetwood's 83 percent of the vote for the At-Large race.

Fleetwood led Wednesday, Nov. 4, with 9,889 votes to Smith's 2,061, showing that despite a large money advantage for Smith - she brought in more than $22,000 in about a month - having your name on the ballot likely is a bigger factor in getting votes.
