Many Halloween events geared to families, kids

There are plenty of Halloween events today and tonight, Saturday, Oct. 31, for families and youngsters.

Preschool story time, 10:30 a.m., Point Roberts Library, 1487 Gulf Road. Enjoy a half hour of stories and more for kids 3 to 7. Free.

Bat box building party, 11 a.m., Whatcom Land Trust, 110 Central Ave. Kids 10 and older, and adults, can learn about bats and build bat houses that will be placed on tall poles on Land Trust properties. Reserve a spot by calling 650-9470.

Halloween fun at Community Food Co-op, noon to 2 p.m., downtown store at 1220 N. Forest St., and Cordata store at 315 Westerly Road. Kids can decorate a cookie and make a craft. Free.

Downtown trick-or-treat, 2 p.m., vicinity of Cornwall Avenue and Holly Street. The Downtown Bellingham Partnership invites parents and children to visit merchants who have treats for kids in costume. Last year more than 1,000 trick-or-treaters visited more than 125 businesses. Free.

Halloween portraits downtown, 2 p.m., former Penney's building, 1310 Cornwall Ave. Portrait photographer Mark Turner will photograph trick-or-treating children in costume. Each child will receive a complimentary 5-by-7 portrait, and additional prints and packages can be ordered. Children must be accompanied by parent or guardian.

Halloween stories, 3 p.m., Village Books, 1200 11th St. Join members of the Bellingham Storytellers' Guild for fun and spooky Halloween stories appropriate for kids of all ages. Free.

Spooktacular tales, 4 p.m., Lynden Public Library, 216 Fourth St. Enjoy not-too-scary stories, and treats, for kids 5 and older. Free.

Kids' Halloween Monster Mash, 4 p.m. Firehouse Performing Arts Center, 1314 Harris Ave.

Hosted by Dance Gallery, kids 3 to 12, and their parents, are encouraged to come in costume and enjoy fun movement games. A Dance Gallery dancer will run each station. Free.

Boo at Bloedel Halloween Carnival, 4:30 p.m., Bloedel Donovan Park, 2214 Electric St. Admission: $2 per child, at the door.

Hi Ho harvest party, 6 p.m., Hillcrest Chapel, 1400 Larrabee Ave. Activities include carnival games, crafts and candy. No scary costumes; all ages welcome.

Halloween party, 6:30 p.m., Our Kitchen is Your Kitchen Bakery & Studio, 3111 Newmarket St., no. 106. Staff at the business invite people to a fun and creative evening.

Clean and sober Halloween dance, speakers at 7:30 p.m., dance at 9, Melody Hall, 4071 Home Road. Live rock music by Sovereign, costume contest, raffle. Family-friendly event; $10 general, free for kids 12 and younger. Details: caofwa.org, 599-1519.

Halloween at Chuckanut Brewery, 8 p.m., Chuckanut Brewery & Kitchen, 601 W. Holly St. The Dear Johns play two-piece acoustic old time country. People in costume receive happy hour prices all night. Prizes for best costumes. All ages welcome. No cover.

Mystic Gypsy Halloween, 8 p.m., Skylark's Hidden Cafe, 1308 11th St. Enjoy Gypsy music, Ouija boards and other mystic fun. Fortune teller Danah Peace will perform personal readings for donations to Bellingham Food Bank.

Hellingham at The Upfront Theatre, 8 and 10 p.m., The Upfront Theatre, 1208 Bay St. Hilarious and scary, Hellingham is an improvised murder mystery created by The Upfront Theatre. Appropriate for all ages. Tickets: $10 general, $8 students. Call 733-8855.
