Jon Stewart declines key to Bellingham

BELLINGHAM - Mayor Dan Pike says that Jon Stewart will not be coming here to accept the key to the city.

Pike said he heard about a week ago, via representatives from Stewart's talent agency, that the television pundit appreciated the offer but was too busy to accept.

Bellingham's mayor offered Stewart the honor on the heels of Mount Vernon's mayor offering, and then giving, Fox News commentator Glenn Beck a key to that city.

The mayor said Stewart's decision was not a big deal to him, because the point of the offer was more to spark community conversation. Pike said that was accomplished.

Pike's offer sparked a social networking extravaganza, including an online petition and a Facebook group that rose to more than 6,600 fans.

The mayor said he still intends to send Stewart a key to the city of his very own.
