The Whatcom Chief is expected to return to service Wednesday, bringing a car ferry back to Lummi Island.

The Whatcom Chief should be back for the run starting about 3 p.m. It still has to complete sea trials and a U.S. Coast Guard inspection.

The current contracted passenger-only ferry is expected to make morning runs Wednesday, stopping at 9:50 a.m. Then crews will make modifications to the docks so the Whatcom Chief can begin running that afternoon, according to Whatcom County Public Works.

The shuttle service that had been operating during the Whatcom Chief's absence will continue through Wednesday. All cars need to be removed from the supplemental dry dock parking areas on Gooseberry Point and Lummi Island by the end of Monday, Oct. 5, or they will be towed at the owner's expense, according to Whatcom County Public Works.
