A Bellingham woman was airlifted to St. Joseph Hospital with life threatening head injuries after she crashed her pickup truck into a pole on Mount Baker Highway near Kendall Friday afternoon, Sept. 18.
The 37-year-old woman was driving westbound in a Dodge pickup truck at 3:30 p.m. when she went off the highway at a bend in the road and struck the pole head-on, said Trooper Keith Leary of the Washington State Patrol.
The pole broke in half and smashed across the truck's front windshield, Leary said. A witness told troopers the truck was swerving between the centerline and the edge of the highway before it went off the road and crashed, Leary said.
Troopers were still investigating the crash's cause Friday evening.
There were no passengers in the truck, and troopers were not certain if she had been wearing a seatbelt, Leary said. He did not release her name.
One lane was closed to traffic while troopers investigated. It was still closed at 6:45 p.m.
