Mount Baker Highway will be closed from 7:30 a.m. to noon Sunday, Sept. 13, just east of Glacier near Canyon Creek Road.

The road will be closed to all vehicles from milepost 35 to Artist Point for Ride 542, a cycling event with more than 800 bicyclists riding car-free to Artist Point.

The ride up to Artist Point is timed, and cash prizes are given to the winners, said Charlie Heggem, NorKa Recreation owner and event director. The ride down is not timed, and people are welcome to return to Glacier at their leisure. At least 90 percent of the riders do the entire 50-mile ride to Artist Point and back, Heggem said.

This is the seventh year for the ride. Registration has closed, but locals will have one last chance to sign up from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 12, in Glacier.
