BELLINGHAM - Sherman Alexie and David James Duncan will be at Western Washington University on Friday, Sept. 25, to raise money for the Liam Wood Flyfishing and River Guardian School.

The two writers will share the stage with musician Jeffrey Foucault for an evening of music and stories as a benefit for the school's youth flyfishing programs. The school teaches the art of flyfishing to connect students to the ecology of fish, rivers and watersheds.

The nonprofit was started in honor of Liam Wood, an 18-year-old Sehome High School graduate and flyfisherman who drowned while fishing in a favorite watering hole at Whatcom Creek. He was overcome by fumes from 237,000 gallons of gasoline that had leaked from a ruptured pipeline in Whatcom Falls Park on June 10, 1999.

Two 10-year-old Bellingham boys also died in the ensuing explosion.

The event begins at 7 p.m. at the Performing Arts Center.

Tickets cost $15 for general admission and $10 for students. Buy them in Bellingham at the Community Food Co-Op, 1220 N. Forest St. and 315 Westerly Road; Village Books, 1200 11th St.; and the office of the Nooksack Salmon Enhancement Association, 2445 E. Bakerview Road.
