MAPLE FALLS — Makeshift wooden buildings connected to two trailers that served as the home to several families burned to the ground Wednesday morning, Aug. 19.

The 11:08 a.m. fire off Casey Road ruined the families’ possessions and caused three trees to catch fire, said Whatcom County Fire District 14 Chief Denise Christensen.

The cause is under investigation but may never be determined, Christensen said.

Andrew Sloane, 19, returned from a day at the Northwest Washington Fair to find his home destroyed.

Sloane was living on the site with his girlfriend, their 2-month old baby and eight other people, including 1- and 3-year-old children.

The families were given food and clothing and are being put up in a motel by the Mount Baker Chapter of the American Red Cross.
